Castle Gate Photographs

The coal mining camp of Castle Gate was opened in 1888 when a coal seam was found in that area, three miles north of Helper. It grew into a large mining camp with people from many national origins. It will always be remembered for the tragic explosion March 8, 1924, when 171 men were killed. There are many photographs in the collection of this period. Today the mining camp of Castle Gate has been closed and some of the homes moved to an area in Helper, and other places in the county.

Please keep in mind that these photographs have been reduced in size to approximately 1 1/2" to 2" to save on server space and download time. The original size of the photograph varies. Please see the Introduction page for details on ordering photographs along with the price list.
