Consumers Photographs

Consumers was one of three towns in the Gordon Creek Area of Carbon County, that, while they were distinct they seemed to exist as a single entity: Consumers, Sweet and National.

    A. E. Gibson, Superintendent of the Spring Canyon Coal Company, discovered coal in the area in 1921 and opened the Consumer mine in 1922, hauling out 34 car-loads of coal which was shipped from Wildcat Siding on the Utah Railway. Between 1924 and 1931 Consumers grew into a good sized camp with a four story apartment house, store, service stations, post office and homes with well-kept fences and gardens. A school was built in 1931 to serve the educational needs of all three camps. During the depression the mine eventually closed and people left the camp. But then came World War II and production picked up again and the camps were full of miners working long shifts. Six years following the war the three mines were closed and all camps deserted.
