Spring Canyon Photographs

Under the direction of "Uncle" Jesse Knight, the large town of Spring Canyon began modestly in 1912 with 60 stone homes and with the name of Storrs. From the beginning, "Uncle Jesse" wanted his town to be a success. Knight even laid his own railroad tracks up the canyon to connect with Helper. In 1924, the town changed its name to Spring Canyon but the town continued to grow in spite of the confusion. Spring Canyon boasted a modern company store, a hospital, a school and a fabulous bakery. The most unusual amenity was the large, heated swimming pool. The water was heated by live steam from the coal company's central boiling plant and piped half a mile to the pool. Everyone in Spring Canyon was encouraged to learn how to swim.

At its peak, Spring Canyon was home to more than 1,000 residents but as coal production began to slow, people started leaving. By 1969 all mining operations were stopped and the town was abandoned.

Please keep in mind that these photographs have been reduced in size to approximately 1 1/2" to 2" to save on server space and download time. The original size of the photograph varies. Please see the Introduction page for details on ordering photographs along with the price list.
