Standardville Photographs

Begun in 1912 by F.A. Sweet, the town was so modern and so well planned it was named Standardville - becoming a "standard" for other camps to follow. In 1915, coal production increased and Standardville's population soared. At one point, the town boasted steam-heated apartments, a general store, a butcher shop, its own hospital, a recreation hall, tennis courts and a school with four elementary teachers.

The town of Standardville slowly faded away as more and more miners left their town to live in Helper. The mine office remained open and two families resided in the town until the summer of 1974 when the "standard" of all mine towns was finally abandoned.

Please keep in mind that these photographs have been reduced in size to approximately 1 1/2" to 2" to save on server space and download time. The original size of the photograph varies. Please see the Introduction page for details on ordering photographs along with the price list.
