Winter Quarters Photographs

Winter Quarters, a mining camp west of Scofield, Utah has been a ghost town since its closure in 1928. All that is left of Winter Quarters is one wall and the foundation of the company store, an occasional foundation of buildings and houses and on the other side of the canyon one can find the remains of the old blacksmith shop. The coal mine was opened in 1975 and a mining camp was built bringing in several hundred miners and their families. On May 1, 1900 an incredible explosion shook the country side and when it settled 199 men were dead. The bodies were removed, buried and the grieving widows and children remained. There was an outpouring of flowers and help from the state and the country for the victims of this great tragedy. The United States Congress, however, refused to give financial help because they did not want to set a precedent.

Please keep in mind that these photographs have been reduced in size to approximately 1 1/2" to 2" to save on server space and download time. The original size of the photograph varies. Please see the Introduction page for details on ordering photographs along with the price list.
